Grace Hemmer
Grades 5-7 Orchestra & Vocals Teacher
I discovered and joined the CoFS community in winter of 2022, when I moved back to KC after living in Colorado for several years. After finishing graduate school in Boulder, I began teaching orchestra at a Waldorf school in the area, which was my first introduction to Waldorf teaching and mentality, and I quickly fell in love with it. After moving to KC I greatly missed the Waldorf community, so finding CoFS was kismet! I love building relationships with the students, both musical and on a human level, while guiding them in becoming confident young adults.
Outside of CoFS, I spend time performing with a multitude of groups in the area and have a large studio of private students. If Iām not around town with my violin, then I probably have a book in hand. I enjoy spending time outside, trying new restaurants with my boyfriend, and going antiquing.
Music
Singing together is an integral aspect of Waldorf education. Teachers sing with students throughout the school day, from morning to main lesson to music specialty classes. Music nourishes the developing emotional and soul life of middle childhood and strengthen capacities that stretch into academics such as listening, identifying tone/mood, rhythm, mathematical patterns, and more. Along with singing, students learn to play pentatonic and diatonic flutes, recorder and stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello) through the span of 1st through 8th grades
